Effectively Managing the Virtual Workforce
April
2006 Newsletter
The virtual workforce - anytime,
anywhere, in real space or cyberspace - is the new reality facing
organizations who want to effectively target emerging markets in
different geographical locations, reduce overhead costs and build
alliances with partners located in other countries.
How can organizations depending on a virtual workforce
communicate shared values and goals, make their virtual employees
mutually accountable and create a synergy based on trust, rather than
control? Trends suggest
that virtual workplaces, in which employees operate remotely from each
other and from managers, will become even more prevalent in the future.
Therefore, this represents a significant change in how we work. "How can I manage them if I
can't see them?" is a question that many managers ask.
Enjoy the articles in this issue that present information
on how to set up effective virtual teams, suggestions on managing
virtual workers and ideas to embrace and celebrate these changes. A famous Canadian Hockey Player,
Wayne Gretsky, when asked for the secret to
his success in scoring goals, said, "I don't skate to where the
puck is. I skate where the
puck is going to be."

Confessions of a
Full-Time Telecommuter
THIRTEEN YEARS AGO, I embarked on a personal and professional
adventure when I accepted a job in the Boston area while living in
California, with the intention of telecommuting full time. The
forward-thinking company that hired me (which happens to publish this
newspaper) recognized that it could hire the best people if it cast
its hiring net nationally. Now, of course, telecommuting is a norm

Telecommuters say
it's great for them -- and their boss
Imagine being on a Hawaii vacation and stepping onto the hotel
balcony to watch the sun rise over the Pacific. Then the phone rings.
It's a co-worker from the mainland. Ready for the conference call? It
happened to Darlene Frudakis, president of PetAg Inc., a Hampshire, Ill.-based pet food
maker. Even more surprising was Frudakis's
reaction. "It was just a fabulous feeling," said Frudakis, a ...
